Pre-made websites : good or bad idea when you start a business ?

Posted on March 4, 2017 in News

Pre-made websites have been rising in popularity, especially in recent years. Attractive content management software and website creation packages have come out that allow a professional-looking website to be designed without needing to know how to code. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to using out-of-the-box solutions versus solutions that are tailored to your needs. As a general rule, using pre-made website tools is easier. You don’t have to deal with the back-end, and you can edit your content when you need to; no more calling up a website designer and waiting a week to get the text on a button changed. However, pre-made website tools will often have less customizability; every business is a little bit different, and it can be difficult to find a pre-made website that caters to how you do what you do. If you decide that you want your website to be just like what the pre-made website offers but just with one or two little tweaks, it’s often simply not possible to get what you’re looking for: it is often simply unfeasible for one-size-fits-all providers with thousands or even millions of clients to customize their templates to accommodate small changes for each client. As a result, the answer to “can I?” is all-too-often “no”.

Often, businesses will start off with a pre-made website because it’s a smaller financial investment when you’re just starting out. It’s estimated that content management systems power more than a quarter of the web, so it’s certainly working well for many clients, both for business and personal use.

However, as your business grows, you may find your website bottlenecked by the lack of functionality of the pre-made website: choosing from templates and plugins may simply not cut it when you are really finding that you need something more. This can result in further expenses to migrate your data onto a new website that has been built from scratch. If your investment capital is low, your needs from a website are simple, and you’re quite confident that your needs will also remain that way, then a pre-made website can be a worthwhile solution; fundamentally, the right decision depends on what you’re envisioning growth to look like, and how important customization versus price is to you. Getting a website created by a carefully-chosen professional, who you can build a long-term working relationship of trust with, means that you can get exactly what you’re looking for – a tailored solution designed in consultation with you – and you will be able to rest assured that when changes need to be made, they’ll be responsive and helpful. That said, there’s also some rather incompetent “designers” and “developers” out there, hence the need to choose carefully. It’s a case of caveat emptor, and it’s very important to take due diligence to make sure that you’re really going to get what you’re paying for; having to pay for a website that you’re not happy with, and then maybe get it redone from scratch elsewhere, can be a costly mistake.

At InBold Solutions, we offer a solution for customizable web apps that’s somewhere in between the middle of pre-made and tailored. You don’t need to know any coding to create web apps with us; you basically just drag-and-drop.  However, our development tool is highly customizable and functional, so you can create the sort of web app you want without needing to resort to the considerable expense of designing a website for your business in its early stages, when you’re probably still needing to be very careful about your budget. We also offer a variety of integrated functions that can be very useful to a new business, such as CRM, accounting, invoicing and more. Feel free to get in touch to see what we can do for you!
